Back in the day, when kiwi lad Russell Crowe was 20 year-old Russ Le Roq, this photo and interview appeared in the January 1985 issue of the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly. In what must be his very first encounter with the media, Le Roq show similar, er…confidence in his musical abilities as he does here in the Sydney Morning Herald story last month.

Actually Russell had had a fair amount of exposure in the local media over the previous years. He was well known in AK

  • Lisa says:

I back Simon up on that. In the early 80’s, when I was at high school in Auckland, Russell was a big heart- throb with the girls. I recall much screaming going on when he played at our school.

Okay…maybe I got a bit excited over my find trawling through 80s Woman’s Weeklies; Let’s just say One of Russell Crowes’ Earliest Interviews Ever? :)

  • Tina says:

May I have Le Barf Bag?

  • Dunk says:

And who can forget Le Roq and his staunch performance as one the Greasers in New Independent Theatre’s production of ‘Grease’, end of 1984 IIRC.
He drove all the old theatre queens wild by insisting on having a red hanky hanging out of a back pocket of his jeans – ‘Does he know what that MEANS..?’ they lamented…

  • Peter says:

Lisa, I recall a lot of screaming at his CURRENT gigs, but for a totally different reason….

What does the red hanky mean?

[...] If you don’t know Russell Crowe used to be Russ Le Roq and is widely known as being a ‘difficult’ star. Check out Russ Le Roq’s first interview here. More importantly check out this cautionary tale from a journo who found himself seduced by Russ and celebrity culture and his fascinating tale of media manipulation, Machiavellian behavior and personal struggle to maintain his integrity and sanity.
