I had read that it was collaborative. Cause I was actually reading an article on where she got the inspirations, and P!nk seemed to have no problem giving him credit…so I do not know. I would assume if they were so willing to give him credit, they would have asked him. But I am not involved in the situation, so I cannot say for sure.

Shaun Craill has put it out there, nice and simple. Thank you.
Give credit where credit is due & lead by example – don’t rip others off.
If it was a homage (without credit???), a donation from proceeds would of been made to the estate or an agreed organisation such as suicide prevention.
I’m surprised I hadn’t seen anything about Marty’s cowgirl gettin ripped and on a harley (in the usa). I’m not happy it’s Pink and I’m sure Marty wouldn’t want it. He’s a Guns ‘n’ Roses Fan – Pink You Stink!

Uh huh.. Yeah Pink says in the ‘MTV making of the U + Ur Hand Video’ that she got her ‘alter egos from a comic book and that they were the sexiest things she’d ever seen..’ She wasn’t trying to pass the ideas/images off as her own in any way shape or form.

Just my 2 cents but I think an artist in this situation (or in this case an artists estate) should try and leverage off the publicity rather than waste time crying about copyright. Its just business and even though it seems unfair its happened and its probably easier to make a few dollars off it rather than sue (as this poor girl found out http://www.flickr.com/photos/larajade/513641346/)

I had never heard of baby redknuckles etc till I saw the video, myself and how many other people? This is advertisement on huge scale, I have since been to the website and am really liking the merchandise, thinking of buying some. again, myself and how many other people?????

Just found out about this. Anyone who thinks Marty would have been philosophical about the lack of acknowledgement I think are wrong. I flatted with him in Ponsonby, he told me stories about people who had ripped off his work, he didn’t seem inclined to forget. On the other side of things, he could show real respect for other people’s creative work, including my own.
Pink’s vid is done well, but it is not respectful without permission or formal acknowledgement. It is a bad look for the music industry. If the music industry does not want people to rip music, they need to walk the walk themselves. If the estate choses to make a stand, I will support them however I can.

To people who are saying “it’s all good”, it’s NOT!!! Saying it’s all good for a corporation to rip off your artwork and not pay you for it is not good at all? How would you feel if your artwork was appropriated by someone very rich who could have easily achknowleged you or given you credit? I do like the video and I think the whole advertising thing is good, but this needs to be settled with money – PAY UP PINK!

I’m absolutley disgusted by how blase some people are being about this. They STOLE Marty’s work.

“so what if she stole other artists ideas and called them her own?” HUH? Well, that makes her a thief. Also, call me crazy, but don’t you think anyone who isn’t into Pink (probably most of Illicit’s clientele) are going to go off these particular images now, as there is going to be such a strong association with the singer. This is damaging to everyone involved.

Anybody who works in the industry should know the cans and cannots of the business. A homage doesn’t mean anything if you can’t even credit the artist. It’s not as though the viewing audience all have crystal balls – and can understand the context right off the bat. All of the misunderstanding surrounding this topic would not have happened if his name was simply mentioned right where his art was being used, and those who are still responsible for his works – informed on the use and where. So what if Pink is a great artist? It doesn’t make her any less responsible for being called out when her design team don’t credit properly.

“Half the scenarios in the video were inspired by the drawings of underground comic artist Emond, best known for his collaborations with metal singer Danzig. Meyers said Pink brought him a book of Emond’s drawings while they were brainstorming for the clip and the pair looked through them and picked out a few characters that would fit Pink’s personality.

They include the helmet-clad Rocker Biker Girl, the first character we meet at a place called “Pancho’s Garage,” as well as Hard Candy, seen working a punching bag while wearing diamond-encrusted gloves in the “Hell Hole” chapter. Emond’s work also pops up in a visit to the dizzying rooftop Windy Whistle bar, where Pink portrays the flame-haired, short-shorts-wearing Baby Redknuckles.

Emond, the prolific artist who worked on comics such as “White Trash” and “Accident Man,” painted covers for Danzig albums and co-founded the street-wear clothing label Illicit. His paintings and sketches were heavily influenced by skin art and often featured skulls and knives mixed with hearts, stars, birds and gothic lettering. His comic book drawings frequently involved fierce, muscled women with a gothic/undead look and exaggerated features.

The homage to the beloved creations of Emond — who committed suicide at age 34 in Los Angeles in 2004 — has been generating a stir on comic blogs ever since the clip first began airing in Europe earlier this summer. Meyers said the idea all along was to honor Emond’s art. “It was definitely a source of inspiration for some of the setups, and I wanted to change her outfits for each verse, so we mixed those characters in with the ones I came up with,” the director said.”

I don’t think it was as much theft as it was an homage/inspiration. But it would have been cool to have a mention of the artist at the end of the video, something Like Martin F. Emonds with the year born and year died.
