The Sun has apologised for the grope picture(big deal)and offered to make a donation to the charity of choice of the gropee (again, big deal)…Meanwhile The Guardian says that while the succinct apology appears on page six, “a new story about Prince Harry – “Is Harry the wildest prince in history?” – is flagged up on the front page and covers the centre spread with photos of the prince drinking, smooching and giving a one-finger salute.”

Do people who write such obvious lies and dabble in such ludicrous deception ever face real scrutiny and suffer real consequences? It seems that every time a concoction of crap is released by a tabloid paper, an undisclosed sum of money is “settled” upon out of court, a couple of pasty editorial knuckles are ceremonially tapped, and the show goes on. Provided one tabloid sells more copy than another, the price of credibility, integrity – and a few million pounds – is more than worthwhile. You’d think that there must come a point when this lowest common denominator
“journalism” runs out of celebrity fodder and the appetites of stupid people are finally satiated. But, so long as any fake-titted slapper and drug-addled jock are willing to vomit or pash for a long-lens snaptographer, people buy it, flagrant deceptions and all.
