Trailer & More: Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine, starring Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell and Alan Arkin, looks like a right charmer of a road comedy.
It’s the story of an Alberqueque girl named Olive (Abigail Breslin) who gets a chance to compete at a Californian beauty pageant. The entire family gets on board their VW Kombi and heads to the coast, arguing all the way. Alan Arkin’s grumpy grandpa role is excellent, as obnoxious as Alf Garnett, but full of good intentions: “I know you’re a homo and all but maybe you can appreciate this…”
It received a standing ovation at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and within hours the distribution rights for the film were bought by Fox Searchlight for US$10 million, one of the biggest deals ever made in the festival’s history.
Steve Carell may have been the deal clincher – when shooting commenced on this film a couple of years ago he was relatively unknown – but he’s since found success through The 40-year old Virgin and the US version of The Office.
Little Miss Sunshine is due for NZ release in October, rated R13 – Drug use and offensive language. See the trailer here.
UPDATE: You can see Steve Carell interviewing himself (“I’ve always wanted to ask myself: ‘What would you ask yourself?’”) in the following clip:
