Countdown To DocNZ Festival

Brian Tamaki’s Destiny Church is just one of the topics covered in DocNZ 2006, the international documentary film festival starting in Auckland on September 7th.
In 2005, the Destiny Church announced its political offshoot, the Destiny Party. Destiny in Motion (2006), directed by Peter Bell, follows well-known satirist Te Radar as he infiltrates the ranks of the faithful and asks, “are voters are really ready for this?” First Auckland screening 5.30pm, 7th Sept.
Other films on the programme include How Arnold Won The West (2004), which follows Arnold “The Governator” Schwarzenegger’s campaign and subsequent victory to become Governor of California; Far Off Town: Dunedin To Nashville (2006), NZ rock legend David Kilgour’s journey to the US to record his album Frozen Orange with alt-country legends Lambchop; director Mark Albiston’s film about local artist Tanya Thompson (aka Misery) The Magical World of Misery (2006); as well as Based On A True Story – Fat Freddy’s Drop In Europe(2006) and Lomax The Songwriter (2004), director Roger Kappers’ documentary about legendary music archivist Alan Lomax.

Just saw Far Off Town at the Academy. Absolutely mint doco. The Kilgour is, as you say, a bloody legend, and Lambchop are genius. I would very much urge you to catch it next Tuesday at the Rialto if you can. Go on.
