Zodiac

Coming soon: Zodiac, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr.

David Fincher’s new killer thriller Zodiac is based on Robert Graysmith’s books about a serial killer who operated in the San Francisco area during the 1960s and 1970s.

Fincher has a pretty good track record with Hollywood thrillers. His previous films include Se7en, Fight Club, Panic Room and The Game.

Some big names are attached to this production, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards. The storyline focuses on the lives of the investigators.

Several movies — usually bad — have already been made on this subject. In 1971 a movie called The Zodiac Killer was released. San Fransisco police monitored the audiences, hoping to flush the killer out. Most recently, 2005’s The Zodiac, directed by Alex Bulkley, is a soapy crime drama which uses the murders as a backdrop to show how one police officer and his community were traumatised by the events.

The Zodiac Killer is also referenced a lot in Hollywood — Steve McQueen based his character in 1968’s Bullitt on San Francisco police detective Dave Toschi, who worked on the case (In Fincher’s film, Toschi is played by Mark Ruffalo). And Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry, released in 1971, was set in San Francisco and had a killer called “Scorpio”.

The film is expected to be released May 2007. Check out the trailer here
