The Unbearable Grossness Of Being
posted by Ana Samways at 7:35 am
A baby isn’t all about talcum powder smells, cute jumpsuits and incidental smiles; the truth is it’s more about screaming, puke and poo.
The Story About The Baby is an online journal written by first time father Jeff Vogel who chronicles the birth and subsequent 52 weeks of his first child’s life. Refreshingly unhindered by sentimentality Vogel has written a deadpan, black comedy account of his experience.
(Vogel would like us to note, the baby is named after the character in King Lear, not Buffy the Vampire Slayer).)
Here’s how he sums up meeting Cordelia Krizsan Vogel for the first time…
“After Cordelia came out, I went over to where they were cleaning off the slime and moist unpleasantness so I could get a good look at her. The nurse said “Say something to her.” The first words she will ever hear from her father. The words that begin the journey, where I help her develop from a helpless primate into a productive member of society. But no pressure.”
“Being groggy and about 8 seconds into my first experience with newborns, I said the first thing which came into my mind: “Hello, Cordelia. Welcome to the world. It’s not going to get much better.”
“The nurses did not approve. I don’t feel too bad about it though because:
i. I stand by my statement, and
ii. As far as I know, my daughter does not yet speak English.”

Why does he have an issue with people thinking his baby is named after a Buffy character…? Buffy is the Shakespeare of our time…
