It’s true — and if you’re wondering, the note that Jack White chose to play was ‘F’. The White Stripes are currently on tour promoting their new album Icky Thump, and they finished the Canadian leg of the tour in St John’s, Newfoundland, on 17 July. Every Canadian date prior to this was accompanied by a secret show somewhere in the town, so the good folk of St John’s were on the prowl, ears glued to the local radio station, and traipsing from bar to bar to find them.

Eventually, a stage and instruments were set up and The White Stripes and their full entourage appeared. They played just one note and drumbeat, before announcing “We have now officially played in every Canadian Province and Territory” — and then they sloped off again. Cheeky buggers. While I realise this will leave me open to accusations of cultural heresy, am I alone in thinking that the White Stripes are the most overrated band since Radiohead (and before them The Beatles)? I saw them back in abvout 2000 in a bar called Harvesters in Palmerston North and I was distinctly underwhelmed.

Actually, according to every media report, the note played was C sharp, not F. Sounds like Stereogum got it wrong.

Incidentally, perhaps Stereogum could emigrate to NZ and form a band. He could call it Stereogum and do a one note support show to Stereogram – in F

Nope sorry, it’s definitely an F. Sounds like “every media report” got it wrong.
