We all need a break this time of year, but if you’re anything like us, an indulgent jaunt is not really a priority and the Gold Coast may not be the first destination that springs to mind.

A few weeks back Steven and I went there, courtesy of Gold Coast Tourism. We were Gold Coast virgins and expected the place to be crawling with over-tanned families scoffing fast food, but were pleasantly surprised to discover there are plenty of more sophisticated options on offer.

Over the next few weeks we’ll share our experiences of the Gold Coast AND offer one lucky Spare Room reader the chance to win a trip for two to the Gold Coast for themselves.

The deal is this – they’ll send two adults (departing from Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch) to Brisbane, travelling return economy class on Air New Zealand. The winner will stay three nights in a one bedroom apartment at the plush high rise Mantra Circle on Cavill in Surfer’s Paradise. You’ll also have a rental car (a Mitsubishi Colt Convertible) for four days, courtesy of Red Back Rentals and be treated to a lunch at the fantastic Songbirds Rainforest Retreat up in Mount Tamborine.
