Video: Ross Kemp On Gangs in New Zealand
posted by Ana Samways at 11:03 amThe award-winning British series on the world’s most notorious gangs, fronted by Ross Kemp (best known for playing a thug on British soap Eastenders) and screening on TV One, includes an episode on New Zealand. But before Mongrel Mob members would agree to be filmed, they signed a contract with the British producers preventing the episode from screening here. It is however, available online.
This is a important documentary for New Zealanders because it is a rare opportunity to see our gang culture through the eyes of outsiders. Part one, below.

What a ridiculous show! It honestly made me laugh. Is it a parody, perhaps? Maybe they should do the Rotary Club next? The Mongrel Mob are dinosaurs, as the footage of gang fights (which look about 20 years old) shows. What a joke. On an international level the Mongrel Mob and Black Power are like small fluffy bunnies, and this is just a lame attempt at television sensationalism.

Adam: tell that to Colleen’s mum.
I just hope the interviewees who spoke against the mob don’t have a problem with it being available to a New Zealand audience.

Ian: It’s terrible when bad things happen to innocent people, but individual incidents don’t take away from the absolute insignificance of our gang problem on a global scale. When was the last time the government was terrorised by a NZ gang, or there was a gang shoot-out with automatic weapons and explosives? Like any criminal organisation, these gangs need to be monitored and regulated, but suggesting that the Mongrel Mob or Black Power in any way compare with the worst gangs in the world is ridiculous scaremongering.

It was an insightful look at the Mob, although I think the Black Power would have concerns that they weren’t considered the “more dangerous” one. My concerns are more about the youth gangs, which have rejected even the “basic” rules that the mob follow – I think they will soon be of far greater concern.

It’s not important if the outsiders are just making cheap tv. Really, where is the evidence that this lot are very scary? How many rapes, murders, robberies etc have they been involved in the last 10 years? Come on, some guy teaching taiaha to kids doesn’t scare the bejesus out of me, nor does some idiot barking like a dog.

To those who suggest our gang problem is not as big as other countries, I ask that you say that to innocent victims of gang violence (that couple from over the shore perhaps). Have you ever been to Wanganui or Gisborne? It has a horrible tense feel about it at the best of times. Secondly the point is we dont want it to ever be as bad as overseas which is precisely why we need to stamp on it now. Sensationilise it please!! hopefully someone will notice and stop it.

If you think this doco is laughable or trash TV, I think victims and their families affected by the MOB would have a whole different view. Gang violence is better described as organised violence and any organised antisocial behaviour is a plague on humanity.
Antisocial behaviour is most commonly born from society’s ignorance. If we believe the MOB or any other gang is harmless or ineffective one day we will be woken in the middle of the night with blood on our hands.
Take note people. The MOB was created by kids in the 70’s just imagine what the kids of our day will be capable of. It’s our kids that need to be educated and supported so they don’t ever feel the need gang association is the only way to feel accepted.

This scum needs to be removed from the face of the earth, give them all the P they want I say.
If the NZ government grew some balls and had an open season on these animals (all gangs) I’d be one of the first in line to buy a plane ticket back and a rifle.
To try and legitimise their behaviour by linking it to their barbaric history is ludicrous, “hello, this is the 21st century calling, anyone home??”
To have MPs defend this scum is indicative of the problems NZ faces.
Thank God I got out with my family before my kids were subjected to the terrorism I was as a youngster.

Adam, you think they are bunnies? they kill and maim people. steal heaps of stuff off anyone. why dont you go to their headquarters and call them bunnies, you’ll be lucky to still be alive, aye!

The scary thing isn’t the children leaning taiaha, in front of the camera’s but what those children will be taught and be exposed to away from the cameras. No they aren’t in the same ball park as some international gangs but the pain and suffering they do cause is significant.
May 17th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Probably the most shocking aspect of this doco is the example of our justice system on display. International viewers will be beside themselves that a man who tortured two cops and still speaks proudly of it today, is walking the streets a free man.
May 21st, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Perhaps those who don’t believe it should talk to the families of victims and take a look at what is happening in South Canterbury where both gangs are flexing their muscles. They are the scum of the earth and need to be wiped out.

it isnt the children learning taiaha but rather that they are learning it from a patched member thereby thinking the patch is ok,like all gangs they are just scum the bit that got me is they are so anti social but when the shit started flying in christchurch they still called the cops all the cops should of done is closed down the street for the safety of the citizens and just left them to it

I SERVED IN BOSNIA FOR 6 MONTHS WITH THE U.N SECURITY FORCES, AND I PROMISE YOU WE ALL SAW THE WHOLE ETHNIC CLEANSING THING, 24/7 .WHITES KILLING WHITES .SO YES I HAVE SEEN WORSE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE REAL INHUMANE TREATMENT TO ONE ANOTHER ON A GLOBAL SCALE.BY THE WAY ,I HAPPEN TO BE A “HEARTY” MAORI FROM LITTLE OL’ KIWI LAND ,WHO TRIED TO HELP WHITE PEOPLE FROM KILLING ONE ANOTHER, BROTHER!!!!
August 11th, 2008 at 9:26 am
I agree with Jen, Alan and others who know what a scourge these scum are. Unless you have experienced the way these ‘fluffy bunnies’ operate – don’t think you have the experience to comment. They intimidate, threaten, verbally and physically and exist to perpetrate crime. We’ve been on the receiving end and as soon as we can will be relocating.

LOYALTY, HONOUR AND RESPECT S13G FUCKN H13L MOB RULES
September 8th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Honour cannot exist beside Revenge.
Hilter must giggle in his concrete grave, if he had had his way the likes of the mob would not be sent to the gas chamber but disected alive like dogs. Then fed raw to the other mob members.
How appropriate.
Being Maori my ancestors will live on, as brave warrior chiefs, proud men and women who protected thier whanau with mana, all the mob is based on is revenge.
Family members have been patched and in passing comment was made, why the patch why the mob, the main message was always to “create fear so as not to have to feel or face fear” seemed cowardless to me.
Denise may have to leave the mob the chapters now do battle with each other rape and rip off each other the drugs are killing the young but the patches even faster, the evil does circle and find the creator, Denise would not survive as one to stand alone as one man, with out the patch the mask the memories now running thin, then what would be left.
Kia kaha
youll need it

at the end of the day a gang is a gang, anyone with the ruthless disregard for others wellbeing and plain and simple savage mentality the majority of these men have is dispicable. it may not be on as grand a scale as other countries but it doesnt stop 99% of nzers from looking back at a patched up guy to make sure theyre not coming after them. its not the fore fathers and memories of what the mob used to be that scares us its the effect they are having on our youths and the lengths these kids will go to just to get their patch. A victim of their atrosities from 20 years ago is just as important as someone that was killed today and we all know they are huge in the drug rings now and killing themselves off but personally im glad theyre doing it to themselves rather than innocent people

It was a disgusting documentary. I feel for all the families of the victims involved. I really felt for Colleen and her mum. Whats up with the tampon part gross me out and I dont think the chick enjoyed it, she was probably scared and so was the rest of the people in the stoopid bar. I dont have a problem with gangs but if they are going to hurt or even kill other people then they need to get wiped out like the dinosaurs

These filthy illiterate pond scum should have been in hitlers gas chambers & incinerators instead of the Jews.I would have paid any price for ringside seats,& applauded the whole way through the process. But we can all be thankful that these pieces of shit will eventually end up eating themselves.
August 25th, 2009 at 3:15 am
hey not all gang members behave like this and not all behaviour like this is from gang members.
