Australian film director Baz Luhrmann’s ponderings became a number one single in the UK in 1999. Here is “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” to brighten up your Monday.

Luhrmann was responsible for Strictly Ballroom (and as a consequence, inadvertently the Dancing with the Stars franchise), the musical film Moulin Rouge! and upcoming period epic Australia, with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.

Let’s give crecit where credit is due.

The words are by Mary Schmich of the Chicago Tribune. She wrote this piece (called “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young.”) as the satirical commencement address she would give if ever asked to do one.

Baz wrote the music, but the song was essentially just cashing in on the already widely circulating and well known essay – often misattributed to Kurt Vonnegutt.

Poor Mary Schmidt, more than likely this will be the most widely read piece she ever writes, and she never gets any credit for it.
