Put yourself into a year book like I did … (left to right: 1964, 1968, 1978, 1990) here. Damn fine in the afro, but not sure about the 1990 home perm.

Quiz: See how many of the 100 most common words in the English language you can guess in 5 minutes… It’s certainly not as easy as it looks. I got 56, which is genius level, but only because I have been running beginner word lists with my five-year old for the last three months.

Gnome now back home in Gloucester after seven month OE: “He’s been swimming with turtles off the Great Barrier Reef, scaled a glacier in New Zealand and toured the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat.”

Any Online Daters out there? A friend of Spare Room and struggling PhD student is researching online dating and needs to interview a few more Auckland-based men (straight or gay) and especially gay women who have used online dating here in New Zealand. “I’m willing to travel all over the city, or participants can come to my office at the University of Auckland. If anyone out there is interested in being interviewed just reply to and I’ll send more information.”

Picture this: A gallery of contorted, straining, weightlifting faces.

A Boy Today … A Man Tomorrow: An educational sex education manual from 1972 debunking popular myths of the time, like “pimples are due to masturbation”. Check it out at Weird Universe.

Video: Boba Fett action figure doing that scene from Flashdance. A compelling watch. (For those un-geeks like me who had to ask who Boba Fett is, he’s Star Wars bounty hunter… and even geeks know what Flashdance is).

Common words – 50 – I’m so disappointed. Only half of them!?

Anyone else notice the picture of the Last Supper behind Boba Fett? It just looked…odd given the circumstances. Though the circumstances were a plastic doll from Star Wars dancing on a kitchen table to Flashdance…

What puzzled me about the word test was that things like “stop”, “don’t” and “peanuts don’t belong up your nose” weren’t there. Clearly they didn’t make their list whilst listening to the parents of small children.
