Winston Peters Dog Toy and Other Choice Links
posted by Ana Samways at 12:38 pm
It’s official, Winston has gone to the dogs: Some bright spark has put this Winston Peters squeaky dog toy, still in its packaging, up for sale on Trade Me. “It was bought several years ago and is not now being manufactured. If you love Winston Peters you could keep this as an ornament or it you don’t love him, you could throw him to the dogs!” Bid here. (and read the latest instalment of The Outlaw Pages here)
Local crime news: “The New Zealand Police are finally doing something about all those lighter thieves out there, about time!,” says Andy. Check out this recovered item from Operation Snatch, which is the dubious name the police have called the spate of purse thieving that’s been going on.
Television: Did you watch Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? New Zealand styles last night? Join the conversation here, if you have something more to say than “Hosking needs a haircut”.
Russia wants to ban South Park … saying the satirical cartoon series is “extremist”.
Fashion weak: Posh gets a very short haircut (I know you’re going to look)
Video: Poor man’s Steve Irwin gets nailed by boa constrictor.
History through the eyes of those who lived it: Witness accounts of almost every important historic event you can think of.
Video: I really don’t want to post this; but it’s so strange I think I have to: Children’s slide designed to resemble a penis (possibly… no definitely… NSFW).
Side effects of war: Staying indoors trying to avoid the the last five years of violence, Iraqis now face an obesity problem, reports the LA Times.
Video: The trouble all started when the host of an Indian reality show slaps contestant in the face…Anyone translate?

I like Posh’s new haircut. Luckily I’ve been able to cast my vote on whether it’s “hot” or “not” on Stuff.
Without mindless polls my life wouldn’t be worth living.

What a random video! Why did she slap him in the first place? And why is she dressed as a dominatrix?

Hey! That’s my lighter! Operation Snatch my ass!

What’s with all the Louis Vuitton items? Did someone’s luggage set get snatched?

1.23: Send your sister her! You sister’s Prick! (Meaning sister F*&#er)

It has been translated by Kamal pretty much correctly.
This show needs to go offline and the person who produced it should be jailed.
“There’s this game show in India called Dadagiri. Contestants have to survive three rounds of insults by the show’s bullies and compete against each other to win 50,000 Rupees in cash prize. The woman in the video is Esha The Goddess – the self-proclaimed “meanest, nastiest girl from college”. Her job is to put down the contestants and she particularly hates people with ugly faces.
So in this particular episode, Esha yelled against one male contestant. She slapped him. HE SLAPPED HER BACK”

There’s something wrong in “modern” society where a woman can hurt a man, but the man isn’t supposed to do anything to defend himself.
Women have fought for gender equity. But this is NOT EQUITY.

Often get the urge to smack on a woman, Dan? Teach her a lesson, maybe?

Dunno how Bearhunter makes that assumption about Dan from his comment. Perhaps being so ‘right on’ the ability to reason has turned right off. Although it’s a shame Dan’s take on gender issues is simplistic, with so many of the complexities packed into this clip.
The ‘slapping’ isn’t the only gender-related issue here, or the most significant, though there’s more to it than meets the eye (sorry). The returned slap appears almost a reflexive reaction. In court, who should be prosecuted? Gender comes into it – it’s not acceptable to hit women, despite the provocation. But wait, gender, to his defence, already plays its hand (sorry again) He might not have won over his impulse to strike her, but it’s probable he refrains from making it a closed fist, and following with further violence, because his aggressor is female.
The crowd is far more interesting. Their mass display of machismo is grotesque – a good ol’ fashioned, atavistic abandonment of reason, justice and personal responsibility in the name of, yep, proving they’re blokes. Their lynch mob actions raise many questions. Why are they all men (but for one woman, possibly crew)? Why don’t women get up, because they’re women? Or is it more likely they aren’t in the audience as it’s unacceptable for them to attend? How is the swearing, (including a bonus ‘sister’ one) respectful to women? Anyone else think it’s paradoxical the bloodthirsty crowd behaves like that to honour a woman or women? Anyone else see how Bearhunter, with his/her comments, hunts with the same pack?

Hear hear Stu – wonderfully literate synopsis of both the fantastically bizarre video (and all its contrasting mores) and the resulting (even more bizarre) reaction from Bearhunter. Think you taught him/her the lesson he/she was so worried about!
