Mailbag: “It seems The Listener is not quite immune to a good hoax. Recently their worthy letter pages have been hosting some discussion about whether Jack Lovelock might have broken the four-minute mile in a secret training session. He didn’t. But the latest letter, from an “Arthur Bromley” of Sandringham claims instead that the first four minute mile was broken by a little-known New Zealander, Tommy Morehu, who beat Lovelock into fourth place in a London race in 1935. Only trouble is, Morehu is the central character in a play called The Man that Lovelock Couldn’t Beat, by Dean Parker. Parker is well-known for his historical pranks, and Morehu is a completely fictional character. Bromley, it seems, is a similar Parker invention — good publicity for the play, but…” (Hat tip: David)

So are men with bad hair-dos, dodgy comic printers, letter writers, bra makers, rubber glove advertisers, fridge and dog toy makers. Thank goodness for the ‘chords.
