Responsible for amusing and terrifying a generation of New Zealand school children, Such A Stupid Way To Die (1971) is an educational video warning of the dangers of going bush (presented artfully by Dai Henwood’s dad Ray, pre-Dai). From the blurb:

“A fictional trip into the bush turns into a Stubbies-clad seventies Kiwi version of the Blair Witch Project as we’re told that one of the group will not survive the night, picked off by that fearsome killer: exposure. The message is serious, but the doom-laden tone induced titters in school classrooms and scout halls throughout NZ.”

I was a little deflated that the the booze wristband givers at the Big Day Out and the young guy at Foodtown late on Saturday night didn’t even bother to ask me for ID. I am obviously happily deluded about how old I look (Suck it up Ana, you’re 38 FFS). I can never tell how old someone is just by looking at them. Can you? Test yourself here, or post a picture of yourself and find out how old other people think you are.

The Telegraph has published an amusing complaint letter sent to Sir Richard Branson (it’s been making the email rounds).

LOL. I remember that movie from school.

Is anyone else WAY better at guessing women’s ages than men? I can guess women’s ages almost right every time but am wildly wrong with half the men. And here I thought as a gay man I had the inside edge on guys…

As for the phone lady, surely that’s not real…surely…why is she making a sandwich? Why does she give a bemused look when a creepy guy turns up at her house? Why is she wearing such a hideous outfit to work? Scarier than Hostel 2.

I remember the “Such a stupid way to die” video so vividly; my primary school had a camp for each year from Std. 2 to Form 2, and they showed it to us every year.

    Hiya.
None of the links to the Flight of the Conchords videos work (YouTube has pulled it down) but it’s still available here.
