NZ Ads from the 80s
posted by Ana Samways at 11:53 amIf you were raised by television like I was, you will probably remember these clips like it was yesterday and although you will enjoy them, your pleasure will be tinged with sadness as you realise you are now old and increasingly irrelevant. My favourite is this catchy ad for some outfit called United Bank. It must be from the 80s because there’s some dude on roller skates. (Also features the iconic Kean’s Jeans neon cowboy sign from Queen Street).
In 1987 competition from Ansett forced Air New Zealand to come up with Pacific Class.
Wholesome PK Chewing Gum Ad from 1989 (Is that gum the worst flavour or what?)
“When you’ve got Levis, you’ve got a legend,” declares this ad from New Zealand
A huge song and dance number for Shell, featuring Lucy Lawless before she was famous.

Scary very scary but there were some very catchy jingles back then. I do remember the bank, levis & shell ones. Is it just me or were the ads not so in your face and more entertaining back then?

If you go back to the 70’s ads get even badder. I found this KFC ad the other day. I remember Hugo and Holly, I even remember hassling Mum and Dad until they got us Hugo Fun Packs
And like the description says, whooo, check out how large Hugo and Holly are – that’s certainly something you don’t see in KFC ads any more !

Actually it was the United Building Society.
Those were the days when you could have a savings account without base fees, account keeping fees, transaction fees etc etc!
