Soul-power-coverSpare Room has three copies of the newly released documentary Soul Power to give away, courtesy of Madman Entertainment NZ.

Soul Power centres on the legendary soul music festival held in Zaire in 1974, featuring oustanding footage of James Brown and the JBs, Bill Withers, Miriam Makeba, The Spinners, BB King, The Crusaders and more.

The film includes preparations and performances from the music festival that was to accompany “The Rumble in the Jungle” – the heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in 1974. The concept was to bring African American soul, funk and blues musicians “back home” to Africa to perform alongside African stars. Other footage shot at the time was edited to form the film When We Were Kings. Although there is footage of Ali and boxing promoter Don King, Soul Power is more about the musical performances and makes a great companion piece to When We Were Kings.
