Video: Onlookers caught video footage of a cop punching a 17-year old woman in Seattle after a jaywalking incident. Incredibly, police bigwigs say the officer used the appropriate amount of force for the situation. What do you think? (Full story here)

  • Snoop says:

She was lucky to get away with a punch. Co-operate with the cops and you won’t have to worry about your safety. She was asking for a tasering.

  • Leila says:

Seattle is one of the only cities I know of that strictly enforces jaywalking laws. Seattle residents will stand at a corner in the middle of the night, with no traffic in sight, and wait for the crossing light.

  • Ngaire says:

Just how serious an offence is jaywalking considered there? I’d have thought a fine or warning would be sufficient, but he seems intent on taking her into custody. No matter how “provocative” the woman (or bystanders) may have been I can’t see how a punch in the face could ever be appropriate in an event so minor.

  • jeremy_inc says:

Wasn’t that bad, the guys trying to deal with some arrogant person resisting arrest and another person attacks him.
Just because the people involved are female doesn’t make it OK to attack police.

  • stacey says:

Ok, she totally had that coming. Just watching it made me wanna whack her down.

glad the cops stuck up for him

  • Fiona says:

It looks like the Police Officer had his books on his car writing out a citation and he then gets attacked by the women involved. Just how much do you think an officer can take in a day? If he writes out 20 Jaywalking citations a day does that mean he gets attached by 20 or more people per day and he is to remain calm? I am a very patient person but attack me over and over and I’ll hit you too!

  • Pete says:

That’s one of the reasons I left the US. “Land of the free” – what a joke. Highest number of prisoners per capita by far in the world. This video shows why. What a horrible country to live in.

  • Jimi says:

I’m glad the comments on here are sane and rational… She may have been stopped for jaywalking, but we have no idea what she did after he stopped her.

She was resisting arrest, and her friend assaulted a cop and got hit for it.

  • Matt says:

I had been expecting to see some police brutality, but in my opinion the punch was fully justified. I would’ve done the same. She made it difficult for herself, the police weren’t being unfair.

  • Jade says:

What happened to using pepper spray or a taser? No, they save their tasers for old ladies during traffic stops lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yWaE8tTlsc

Useless cop should have been fired!

  • Kieran says:

Self defence I guess. Everyone knows how dangerous it can be over in the States. She could have had a weapon – a gun, a knife, who knows. What if she had stabbed the cop, or shot him? As he didn’t seem to have backup (where was that, by the way?), and was surrounded by a crowd, he reacted in self preservation by the looks of it. I think another aspect is how uncomfortable it is to see a woman punched in the face, in public no less. If that had been a man he hit, would we care so much?

  • Lance says:

    USA … USA … USA

  • Stephen says:

Racisim at work, they dont care how many times the white cop gets hit trying to make an arrest or how many people interfere to help a criminal escape, but as soon as he defends himself it’s “assult”

  • red cordial says:

Completely unjustified, I mean she was just standing there as an innocent bystander, not getting involved, not threatening the officer, not interferring in any way, shape or form or preventing the officer from going about his work. If she wasn’t the one being arrested, what was she doing getting herself within an arm’s length of the officer?

  • Eren says:

What else was he supposed to do? He was already trying to deal with a squirming, screaming, uncooperative woman when he gets shoved in the chest by the lady in the pink – she looked as if she would have kept shoving too, had he not done what he did, in which case he would have had two screaming uncooperative women to deal with. His technique worked, lady in pink backed off (waaay off) and he could concentrate on getting Ms Uncooperative in cuffs, who I noted continued to squirm and scream and generally make the whole process ugly and difficult for several minutes. He was clearly the only cop available, I don’t think he had much choice.

  • Terry says:

Generally justifiable behaviour for someone resisting arrest, in my view, with the one exception of hitting the woman in the pink top in the face, which is way out of line. Would be interested to hear what the NZ police think about it.

  • Tarns says:

Given the aggression and behaviour of her and her associate.. That cop used reasonable force. In my opinion, he did well given the circumstances.

  • kelly says:

She attacked him, what did she expect – to get away with it just because she’s female? If that had been a guy no one would have batted an eyelid. Good on the PD for backing him up.

  • Dan says:

You know what sickened me most about the video? The cop is there struggling with two people and not a single person is helping him. 2 people at least are video recording him, rather than lending a hand.

  • Inde says:

The woman struggles because he completely man-handles her. Although, if she had just stopped resisting, she probably wouldn’t need to battle. The punch to the lady in pink seemed uncalled for, brutal even. However, it’s the states and they don’t do things by halves. Overall, without the entire incident on camera, it appears over the top. Perhaps with all the incident on camera, it might seem more reasonable. I’m all for police & laws, but police officers aren’t above the law themselves.

  • jamie says:

its called reasonable force, the officer did what was nessecary to try and control a clearly irratic citizen. his job was hard enough without her lack of co-operation and bystanders interfering. thank goodness the situation didnt escalate. job welldone officer

  • Row says:

Interesting one. I don’t think a punch should have been thrown, but the woman needed to be subdued & handcuffed alot faster than she was. The police officer was pretty incompetent in trying to deal to her and restrain her, it caused the incident to drag on longer than it needed to.

  • baz says:

The cop should have tasered her multiple times, and then shot her for good measure!!!!

  • Uncledog says:

I think the cop deserves a medal for not snotting both of them.God knows they deserved it.

  • Rondo says:

Many developed countries punish J-walking with a spot fine and as such you often find people waiting at a red light when there is little or no traffic.

NZ and the UK are more the exception rather than the rule.

  • Jono says:

Another way would be to forget trying to arrest them and just push them back out into the traffic :)

  • Johnny says:

Simply a police officer dealing with an un-cooperative offender (and being a jay-walking offence is completely irrelevant), who is then attacked by another woman. As he seems to be on his own, he had to try his best to subdue the offenders quickly. He did what he had to do. Anyone that says this is police brutality, or uses it as ammunition against the police is clearly blind or stupid.

  • Liz says:

I think she forgot she lives in the United States and she’s African American.

I’m glad she was ONLY punched. The cop could have shot and killed her and gotten away with it.

White cop Vs African American? They’ll ALWAYS side with the cop no matter what. Even if it’s caught on tape.

  • Lindy08 says:

No – she attacked him!! Two against one so his is self-defence. She resisted arrest and did not co-operate. What makes it even worse is that NO-ONE helped the policeman… how pathetic can you get?

  • fortes22 says:

    Do not resist arrest.

Do not attempt to assault an policeman.

    Onlookers please assist in future.
