John Key in a Waterbed

John Key

NZ On Screen have procured a gem of a clip from an early version of Close Up (1987) featuring a baby-faced 25-year-old ’senior forex trader’ with Deidre Barlow glasses who plays squash in teeny tiny stubbies. His name? John Key.

It’s easy to see how he made his millions. His employers say he was exceptional at his job and they paid him well. And although Key wouldn’t say what he was on, the range is NZ$75,000 -500,000. The irony is, later the same year the world financial markets collapsed. It would’ve been great if they did a follow up story later in the year.

pretty sick that the way to make big money is not to do anything useful but to gamble with other peoples’ money

After this, John Key was head hunted and went to work in England. Where he was involved in a $300,000,000 deal that successfully crashed the NZ dollar 5-10% and made him a LOT of money.
