Hawaii Five-0 is back
The 2010 remake of Hawaii Five-0 has been running for several weeks now in the USA and it’s getting some pretty favourable reviews, with one reviewer describing the fast-paced police procedural as “Not your mama’s Hawaii Five-0”.
The pilot, which screened in the US in late September, attracted 14.213 million viewers, with a further 3.374 million watching it during the week that followed — making it the “most DVR’d show of all time” according to news sources. And most importantly, the Hawaii Five-0 theme hasn’t been tinkered with too much.
The original series ran for 12 years, from 1968 to 1980, and starred Jack Lord as Inspector Steve McGarrett.
Taking on the lead role is Australian Alex O’Loughlin, who starred in Aussie drama The Oyster Farmer and has appeared in TV shows including The Shield — O’Loughlin was a candidate for the James Bond role that eventually went to Daniel Craig.
The character of McGarrett is a former Navy Seal looking for his father’s murderer, who is asked by the Hawaiian Governor to assemble a special crime task force and granted extraordinary “no questions asked” powers.
Scott Caan (the son of James Caan) plays Danny “Book ‘em Danno” Williams. Caan has a recurring guest star role in Entourage and has been in Ocean’s Eleven through Thirteen. Daniel Dae Kim from Lost plays Chin Ho Kelly and Grace Park plays his young cousin Kono, a pro surfer going through police academy.
If the reviews are anything to go by, this may be appointment viewing when it eventually crashes onto NZ shores [update: it's part of TV3's new season programming]. Check out the LA Times review of the pilot episode here.

The new theme has some nice tributes to the original. Shame about the pseudo-GUI based graphics — truly awful

Go the music!! Go the folks who realised using anything else would just be plain wrong. I may not watch the series but that bodes very well.
