Mavis Staples

You can add George Clinton, Michelle Shocked and Leon Russell to a musical calendar that’s already overflowing with quality shows including Mavis Staples, The Blind Boys of Alabama with Aaron Neville, The Funky Meters, Bob Dylan and more…

So many international gigs have been been announced in the past month or two, including the return of Justin Townes Earle, who was last seen here as support act for Wilco. Earle is touring from south to north, playing Dunedin (23 March, Refuel), Christchurch (24 March, Al’s Bar), Welly (25 March, Bodega), Auckland (26 March at the Powerstation) and Leigh Sawmill (27 March).

Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama with Aaron Neville were also announced — they’re performing in Auckland (28th April, Civic), Wellington (29 April, St James) and Christchurch (30 April, Town Hall). Another Neville brother, Art, is playing here with the Funky Meters (Powerstation, 15 April). Add to that shows from extraordinary blues guitarist Derek Trucks with his wife Susan Tedeschi, the Easter Grassroots Festival lineup (B.B. King, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello) and WOMAD in Taranaki 18-20 March …. and that’s a whole lotta concert-going to be had.

Auckland’s Powerstation is truly on fire, often hosting several internationals in a week. This morning more gigs were announced — George Clinton of Parliament, P-Funk and Funkadelic fame will perform Saturday 23 April. Michelle Shocked plays there 12 April (she’s also at Bodega in Wellington on the 14th and the Bedford in Christchurch on the 15th) and the great Leon Russell does his one NZ show there on Thursday 21 April.
