Decades-old flyers for ladies’ nights, screw parties and more have been appearing on the Facebook page for Auckland’s Customhouse Tavern & Nightclub. It’s a reminder of the drinking culture in the early 1990s, when big hair, body building competitions and male strippers were some of the the main attractions at inner city bars and pubs.

The one that caught my eye the most was the below image, a print ad from a 1992 edition of Metro, boasting about the number of hangovers caused, condoms sold and their strike rate for er, getting laid. Was the drinking culture in inner city bars any better or worse than it is now? Have get-em-drunk promotions like free drinks for the ladies ceased with stricter policing of bars or does that still go on?
